How to Calculate BMI — What It Means and How to Interpret Your Result

What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It was invented by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s as a way to measure obesity at a population level — not as an individual diagnostic tool.

Today, BMI is the most widely used screening tool by doctors, governments, and health organizations worldwide to quickly classify weight status. Despite its widespread use, it's important to understand both what BMI tells you and what it doesn't.

The BMI Formula

BMI uses a simple mathematical relationship between weight and height:

Metric formula:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Imperial formula:

BMI = (weight in pounds ÷ height in inches²) × 703

For example, a person weighing 70 kg with a height of 1.75 meters:

BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9

This score falls in the "Normal weight" category.

BMI Categories Explained

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the following BMI ranges for adults:

What "Normal Weight" Actually Means

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is associated with the lowest health risks in large population studies. People in this range have, on average, lower rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, joint problems, and certain cancers.

However, "normal weight" doesn't mean "perfect health." Other factors — diet quality, physical fitness, stress levels, sleep, and genetics — play enormous roles in health outcomes.

How to Calculate Your BMI Step by Step

Using the Metric System:

  1. Measure your weight in kilograms
  2. Measure your height in meters (convert cm by dividing by 100)
  3. Square your height: height × height
  4. Divide your weight by the squared height

Example: 68 kg, 172 cm (1.72 m)

  • Step 3: 1.72 × 1.72 = 2.9584
  • Step 4: 68 ÷ 2.9584 = 22.98 BMI

Using Imperial Units:

  1. Measure your weight in pounds
  2. Measure your height in inches (feet × 12 + remaining inches)
  3. Square your height
  4. Divide weight by squared height
  5. Multiply by 703

Example: 150 lbs, 5'6" (66 inches)

  • Step 3: 66 × 66 = 4,356
  • Step 4: 150 ÷ 4,356 = 0.03444
  • Step 5: 0.03444 × 703 = 24.2 BMI

BMI by Age and Gender

While the standard BMI categories apply to adults (20+), the interpretation differs for children, teenagers, and the elderly.

Children and Teenagers (2–19 years)

For children, BMI is calculated the same way but is then compared to age- and sex-specific percentile charts rather than fixed cutoffs. This is because children's body composition changes significantly as they grow.

  • Underweight: Below the 5th percentile
  • Healthy weight: 5th to less than 85th percentile
  • Overweight: 85th to less than 95th percentile
  • Obese: 95th percentile or above

Older Adults (65+)

Research suggests that a slightly higher BMI (25–27) may actually be protective in older adults, reducing mortality risk. This is sometimes called the "obesity paradox." Muscle mass and bone density naturally decline with age, so the same BMI value in an older person represents more fat and less lean tissue than in a younger person.

Gender Differences

Women naturally carry 5–10% more body fat than men at any given BMI due to hormonal and reproductive needs. Some researchers argue for separate BMI standards by sex, though this hasn't been adopted widely.

The Limitations of BMI — What It Doesn't Tell You

BMI's greatest weakness is that it cannot distinguish between fat mass and lean mass. This creates two major problems:

Problem 1: Muscular People Are Often Misclassified as "Overweight"

A professional athlete with 10% body fat and significant muscle mass may have a BMI of 28 — classified as "overweight" — despite being in exceptional physical condition. LeBron James, for instance, has an estimated BMI of approximately 27.5 despite being one of the world's fittest athletes.

Problem 2: "Normal Weight Obesity"

Some people have a BMI in the healthy range but carry a dangerously high percentage of body fat, particularly around the abdomen. This condition, sometimes called "skinny fat" or "normal weight obesity," carries similar metabolic risks to traditional obesity but goes undetected by BMI alone.

Other BMI Limitations

  • Doesn't account for fat distribution: Abdominal fat (around the belly) is far more dangerous than fat stored in the hips and thighs. Waist circumference is a better predictor of metabolic risk.
  • Ethnicity differences: Asian populations face higher metabolic risks at lower BMI values. The WHO recommends considering additional cut-off points for Asian populations at 23 (overweight) and 27.5 (obese).
  • Not for pregnant women: BMI doesn't apply in pregnancy, where weight gain is expected and healthy.

Better Complementary Measures

Use BMI alongside these for a more complete picture:

Waist circumference:

  • Men: Risk increases above 94 cm (37 inches); high risk above 102 cm (40 inches)
  • Women: Risk increases above 80 cm (31.5 inches); high risk above 88 cm (34.5 inches)

Waist-to-height ratio: Your waist should be less than half your height. This single measure is considered by some researchers to be more predictive of cardiovascular risk than BMI.

When to See a Doctor

  • Your BMI is below 18.5 (underweight can indicate malnutrition or health issues)

  • You're concerned about sudden, unexplained weight changes

Can you be healthy with a high BMI?

Yes, particularly if you're muscular. However, a BMI above 30 does statistically increase health risks for most people. Other factors like cardiovascular fitness, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar are also important measures.

Is BMI accurate for South Asians?

Research shows South Asians (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan) develop obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMI values than Europeans. Some health organizations recommend using a BMI of 23 as the overweight threshold for South Asians.

How often should I calculate my BMI?

Once or twice a year is sufficient for tracking trends. Daily or weekly calculations are unnecessary and can contribute to unhealthy focus on weight.
